Pithflow is a dictation app for Mac. Hold Control + Shift + Space in any app, speak, release, and the finished text is typed where your cursor is — filler and false starts removed, punctuation in place, in the tone you chose. It runs on macOS 12 or later, is free for 2,000 words a week, and the same account works on Windows.

How does it work on macOS?

  1. 1
    Hold the key
Control + Shift + Space by default. Click into any text field first; change the key in Settings → Hotkey.
  2. 2
    Speak
Talk the way you'd say it out loud. Ums, restarts and “wait, no” are fine — the cleanup handles them.
  3. 3
    Release
Processing starts when you let go. About a second and a half later, the clean text is typed into the app in front.

Two permissions, asked once

Microphone, so Pithflow can hear you, and Accessibility, so it can type into other apps. macOS asks for the microphone itself. For Accessibility, Pithflow opens System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and you switch it on. Until that's done, dictation stays off so no words are used up.

Long email or first draft? Hands-free mode: tap once to start, tap again to stop.

What does the free plan include?

Pro removes the word cap and the meeting limits: $9.99 a month or $99 a year. See pricing.

How is it different from the Dictation built into macOS?

Your Mac already dictates. Here is where the two differ, honestly:

  Pithflow macOS Dictation
Types into any app Yes Yes
Removes filler and false starts Yes No — it types what it hears
Tone and style you choose Yes, 8 tones No
Snippets and a personal dictionary Yes No
Price Free for 2,000 words a week; Pro $9.99/mo Free, unlimited

macOS Dictation is free, unlimited and already on your Mac. If your text comes out the way you want it, keep using it. Pithflow earns its place when you'd otherwise spend time deleting filler and fixing punctuation, or when you switch between Spanish and English as you talk.

What is not on the Mac yet?

Two things the Windows app has: capturing a video call's audio (Mac meetings record from the microphone), and the three quick dictation modes added to the Windows app in October 2026. Everything on this page is in the Mac build you download here.

Frequently asked questions

Which Macs can run Pithflow?

Any Mac running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later. It's one universal download — the same file runs on all of them, so there is nothing to pick.

Why does Pithflow need the Accessibility permission?

That is how a Mac app types into another app. Without it, Pithflow could only put your words on the clipboard. You switch it on once in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility; Pithflow opens that pane for you the first time.

Is the download safe?

The app is signed with our Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, which is what lets macOS verify it and open it normally on first launch. The download comes from pithflow.com.

Does it work offline?

No. Your audio is sent to Pithflow's servers for speech recognition and cleanup, and it is not stored. Pithflow tells you this before your first recording and asks you to confirm.

Is Pithflow for Mac free?

Yes: 2,000 words a week, AI cleanup, every language, 10 snippets and 25 dictionary terms. Pro ($9.99 a month or $99 a year) removes the cap. One account works on your Mac and on Windows.

Can I dictate in Spanish, or mix Spanish and English?

Yes. Pithflow keeps the language you spoke — say “pásame el report antes del meeting” and that is what lands. It never translates unless you ask it to.

How do I update it?

Download the newest version from this page and drag it into Applications over the old one. Your account and settings stay.
