Google Sheets has no voice typing. Google Docs does — Tools → Voice typing — and Slides has it for speaker notes, but Google's own help page never lists Sheets, and there is no matching menu item in a spreadsheet. To dictate into a cell on Windows you use Windows voice typing (Win + H) or a dictation app.

Google Sheets runs in a browser tab on Windows. That tab is a normal window, and dictation types into whichever window has focus.
This is the part Sheets adds. Text lands at the cursor, and in a spreadsheet the cursor lives inside a cell — so pick the cell before you say anything.

Sheets uses Ctrl + Space for selecting a column, and that's Pithflow's default dictation hotkey. While Pithflow is running it claims that combination system-wide, so Sheets stops receiving it. If column-select is part of how you work, open Settings → Hotkey and pick a combination you don't use in spreadsheets. Takes about ten seconds and the rest of the page still applies.
Text does not appear while you're talking. The real order is this:
A second or two of wait on release. What you get back is a finished sentence in the cell rather than a live stream of your false starts being typed and untyped.
Yes. Open a Docs file, choose Tools → Voice typing, click the microphone, say your text, then copy it and paste it into the cell. This is the route most third-party guides point at, and it does work. Google notes that voice typing runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari.
Two things to expect. Docs voice typing wants punctuation spoken aloud — you say "comma" and "period" — so the transcript reads the way you dictated it, not the way you'd write it. And every entry costs a tab switch, a copy and a paste, which is fine once and tedious across forty rows of a feedback log.
Worth flagging, because it's currently circulating: several "how to voice type in Google Sheets" articles claim Sheets has Tools → Voice typing at Ctrl + Shift + S. That's the Docs shortcut. Open Sheets and check the Tools menu — the item isn't there, and no amount of hunting will produce it.
A document is one long text field. A spreadsheet is thousands of tiny ones, and that changes how dictation behaves and where it's worth using.
With no cell selected there is no text field to type into, and the words go nowhere. Click the cell, then talk. It becomes automatic after about three rows.
Notes, task descriptions, customer feedback, meeting takeaways, status updates. Those cells hold sentences, and sentences are slow to type and fast to say.
A numeric keypad is already quick, and digits leave no room for a transcription slip. Keep the keyboard for figures and use your voice for the columns nobody wants to fill in.

The last row is an honest one: none of the three works offline. Microsoft documents voice typing as using online speech recognition, and Pithflow needs a connection too, because the cleanup happens in the cloud. If you fill spreadsheets on a plane, the tool for that is Windows 11's Voice Access, which recognises on-device.
The Sheets app on Android and iPhone has no voice typing of its own either. What works is the keyboard's microphone: tap the cell until it opens for editing and the keyboard appears, then use the mic on Gboard, or the dictation key on the iPhone keyboard. Like Win + H, it types what it hears, so read the cell before you move to the next one.
On a Mac, macOS Dictation types into any text field, and that includes a Sheets cell in the browser. Turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, click the cell, then start it with the Dictation shortcut or Edit → Start Dictation. Pithflow is built Windows-first, and since September 2026 it also runs on Macs.
Nobody speaks in finished sentences, and a notes column full of "um" is worse than an empty one. This is the kind of repair the AI cleanup does — an illustrative example, not a measurement:

There's no add-on to authorise and no Chrome extension to install. Pithflow is a Windows app that puts text into whatever field has focus — for Sheets that's the cell you clicked, exactly as if you'd typed it. It delivers through the clipboard with a Ctrl + V, and falls back to typing the characters if the clipboard route fails, then restores whatever you had copied before.

Google hasn't published a reason. What is documented is the scope: Docs, plus speaker notes and captions in Slides. Treat the gap as the current state of the product rather than a preference hidden somewhere in Sheets.
Yes, and it's the workaround most guides recommend. Dictate in a Docs file, copy the text, paste into the cell. It works. It also means a second tab, a round trip, and a paste that can carry formatting you didn't want — which is why dictating straight into the cell is less friction.
Click the cell, then press Win + H. The Windows dictation bar opens and what you say goes into the cell. It's free and built into Windows. It transcribes literally, so filler words and mid-sentence restarts land in the cell exactly as spoken, and you say punctuation out loud.
Selecting the cell is enough to start a new entry. If you want to add to text that's already in the cell instead of replacing it, double-click the cell first and put the cursor where the new text should go.
One does. Ctrl + Space is the shortcut Sheets uses to select a column, and it is also Pithflow's hold-to-speak key — registered globally, so Pithflow takes the combination before Sheets sees it. The hands-free key, Ctrl + Shift, is not a Sheets shortcut, and Pithflow only fires it when you tap it on its own, so Ctrl + Shift + arrow and the rest still work. It does share Windows' keyboard-layout switcher if you have two input languages installed. If you use column-select often, change the hold key in Settings → Hotkey; a spare function key such as F9 collides with nothing in Sheets.

Type them. A formula needs exact symbols, function names and cell references, and dictation is built for sentences. Use your voice for the text cells and the keyboard for =SUM(A2:A40).
